This drawing emerged from a study of Ingres' portrait of Madame Antonia de Vaucay, attempting classical precision in charcoal and chalk. The medium resisted, and what emerged was an improvisation from memory—an androgynous head that recalled a 1920s American mugshot of a figure in a flapper dress and necklace, beautiful and vulnerable, possibly what we'd now call transgender.

Two worlds collide—the respectable Ingres socialite and the criminalized outsider. The title comes from a Supertramp lyric: "Watch what you say, they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, oh, fanatical, criminal..." There's something slightly comical about it too.
